Captive Sheet Winch 345/14-27
This STS Captive Sheet Handling Winch has been developed to ease sail handling on the modern sail boat. The very compact size and the nature of operation of these units lends itself to installation below decks or in a lazaret, enabling a very clear deck space to be left for the comfort of the passengers.
The principle of the Captive Sheet Winch is to have a self-contained unit to control sheets and control lines with finger-tip precision. The unit consists of a drum with an internal hydraulic drive and brake unit, mounted on a sturdy frame work. The two speed option has an additional high speed drive unit fitted into the drum.
Rope is fixed to the drum and as the drum revolves the rope is wound on to the drum. The feeder mechanism ensures that the rope is fed evenly on to the drum, with no chance of double wrapping. There is an optional pay-out mechanism which pulls the rope off the drum and clear of the unit, thus enabling the unit to pay-out without any tension on the sheet, if required.
An integral fail-safe hydraulic brake will automatically engage in the event of power failure. In addition the brake will slip at the pre-set tension thus reducing the sheet load and preventing damage to the sail or rig under extreme conditions e.g. a knock-down.
The winch is purpose designed for the marine environment and constructed mainly from aluminium and stainless steel with the power and braking units being immersed in oil to prevent any corrosion problems.
